Vefâtının 116. Yıldönümünde Sultan V. Murad’ın Hatırasına : In Commemoration of the 116th Anniversary of the Death of Sultan Murad V

August 29, 2020 by Ayşe Osmanoğlu

Sultan Murad V
V. Murad : Sultan Murad V

Today, in memory of my great great-grandfather, I would like to share a short excerpt with you from ‘The Gilded Cage on the Bosphorus’, or should I say ‘Boğaz’daki Altın Kafes’. This is the current working title of the Turkish edition of my book. I am excited to say that the translation is well under way and I hope to be able to publish the Turkish edition next year. In the meantime, with the help of my wonderful translator, Özgü Çelik, I hope to be able to share further excerpts of the book over the coming months.

The passage I have chosen to share with you all today describes the sad but calm passing of Sultan Murad. I have included both the Turkish and English translations…

Selahaddin’in Hadice ile Fehime’nin babalarının ziyaretine gelebilmeleri için Sultan’a yalvardığı Yıldız’a mektubu dikkate alınmadı. Bunun sebebi, Abdülhamid’in Murad’ın kızlarına Çırağan’ı ziyaret müsaadesi vermekle, İstanbul halkının zihinlerinde aziz sâbık Sultanlarının ömrünün sonuna yaklaştığına dair şüphe uyandırmak istememesi olabilirdi; diğer yandan, Başharemağası Cevher Ağa sırf sinsilik ve hasedinden Selahaddin’in mektubunu efendisinin görmesini engellemiş de olabilirdi.

Akşamın erken saatlerinde Murad’ın artık son nefesine yakın olduğu anlaşılıyordu. Mevhibe gümüş bir kaşığı dudaklarına götürerek ona biraz şeftali şerbeti içirdi. Fatma, Reftarıdil, Şayân ve Resân sessizce ağlıyor, Selahaddin ile Nihad Kur’ân’dan ayetler okuyor, sözleri hafifçe Murad’ın yüzüne ve vücuduna doğru fısıldayarak söylüyorlardı. Saraya yakın olan Yahya Efendi Dergâhı’ndan gelen Şeyh Abdullah Efendi Murad’ın ruhunu ahirete intikal etmeden önce teskin etmek için alçak sesle Yâsin Sûresi’ni okudu. Sonra Murad’la beraber Kelime-i Şehadet getirdiler. “Eşhedü enlâ ilâhe illallah ve eşhedü enne Muhammeden abdühü ve resûlühü.”

Saat 8.30’u vurmadan hemen önce, Murad gözlerini son kez kapadı ve son nefesini vermeden önce “Allah, Allah” diye mırıldandı.

Ruhunun dünyadan ayrıldığının anlaşılmasının ardından hanımlar hıçkırıklara boğuldular. Onların ağlayıp inlemeleri nihai yolculuğuna çıkarken Murad’ın ruhunu cinlerden koruyordu.

Monday 29th August 1904

In the morning, Murad dictated certain wishes to his scribe, Asım Ağa, in the presence of Selahaddin and Nihad. He made provision for everyone in his household; he also asked that alms be distributed in his name to the poor and sent to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Throughout the course of the rest of the day, his family and the members of his household visited him to kiss his hand one last time, and to pray for his soul. Selahaddin’s letter to Yıldız imploring the Sultan to permit Hadice and Fehime to visit their father was ignored. It may be that Abdülhamid did not want to arouse suspicion in the minds of the people of İstanbul that their beloved former Sultan might be approaching his end by allowing Murad’s daughters to visit Çırağan; then again, it may be that his Senior Equerry Cevher Ağa prevented Selahaddin’s letter from ever reaching his master’s eyes in a final act of underhandedness and spite.

By early evening it was clear that Murad was slipping away. Mevhibe raised a silver teaspoon to his lips and gave him some peach sherbet. Fatma, Reftarıdil, Şayan and Resan wept silently, while Selahaddin and Nihad recited verses from the Quran, whispering the words softly over Murad’s face and body. Sheikh Abdullah, who had come from the Yahya Efendi Dervish Lodge nearby, quietly chanted the thirty-sixth sura, the Sura of Mourning, to soothe Murad’s soul before it embarked on its journey to heaven. The Sheikh then spoke the words of the profession of faith, and was joined in this by Murad. “I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammed is His Messenger.”

Just before 8.30 pm, Murad closed his eyes for the last time, and murmured “Allah, Allah” before letting out his final breath.

Once it was clear that his soul had departed, the ladies began to wail uncontrollably. Their lamentations would protect Murad’s soul from demons as it set out on its final journey.
